What Guatemala Taught Me: A Story of Service, Friendship, and Faith

From Macie Oberhammer, interviewed by Joanna Tschiffely

I’ve been interested in working in healthcare all my life and have been involved in my community, especially serving the less fortunate.  Nearing college graduation, I wanted to serve with a Medical Mission. When I was introduced to God Said Go, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse! I work as a certified nursing assistant in a hospital in Colorado, and I felt this mission trip was a perfect way to meld my personal interests and my skills into a life-changing experience.

During my two weeks serving in Guatemala. I most enjoyed the natural beauty of the landscape and the country’s lovely people. I was met by the kindest and most welcoming folks, whether they were working alongside me in the mission or strangers I met along the way. The countryside was unlike anything I had experienced before. My memories of the villages, people and places I went to will follow me for the rest of my life.

God Said Go staff and volunteers are incredible folks who share my values when it comes to supporting those who need help most. I have always felt destined to do work that makes a positive difference in the world, and it filled my heart with joy to be surrounded by people also drawn to helping others in such an important way.

Throughout my time in Guatemala with GSG, my eyes were opened to the fact that although my own life is different than that of the villagers in the communities we served, there is much that we have in common. Love and kindness can be shown and felt by people everywhere, despite the circumstances they face.

I would absolutely join God Said Go for a second time! The people I met, places I saw and experiences I had there have truly changed the way I see the world. This trip positively influenced the way I want to live my life going forward.
