When Ministry Gets Messy: A Behind-the-Scenes Moment From El Dique

Not every moment on the mission field is picture-perfect—and sometimes the most unexpected challenges become the stories that make us laugh later.

During our recent clinic day in the village of El Dique, our team was unloading equipment and medical supplies, preparing to serve the families who were already gathering outside the church. The path to the clinic site led us through an overgrown patch of tall grass, an area where community dogs often roam and rest. In the busyness of getting everything set up, none of us thought much of it.

But later, we discovered that the tall grass had its own surprise waiting for us.

Both Becky and Rocio—our nurses whose compassion fills every clinic—were unknowingly exposed to fleas hiding in the brush. And because it happened on a day when both were wearing ankle-length clothing, those little critters took full advantage.

It wasn’t until after the clinic, hours later, that the itching began.

At first, it was just a few irritating bites. But as nighttime came, the itching intensified (because, of course, these things always get worse at night!). Thankfully, both were able to manage the reaction with simple treatment—oral diphenhydramine and hydrocortisone cream—and the bites cleared up without complications.

Today, it’s just a funny story we can look back on—one more reminder that ministry isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s medical procedures in tiny churches. Sometimes it’s long hikes with heavy equipment. And sometimes… it’s a run-in with a few stubborn fleas.

But every moment—messy or miraculous—is part of the beautiful calling God has given us: to show up, to love, to serve, and to bring hope where it’s needed most.

And honestly? We wouldn’t trade a single bite!
