In many parts of Guatemala, children are not allowed to attend school unless they bring their own supplies — notebooks, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, paper, and a backpack. And for families living in extreme generational poverty, these items are simply unaffordable.
That means thousands of children stay home every January, watching their classmates walk to school without them.
